Restylane® Defyne in Beverly Hills & Los Angeles
Deep smile lines, marionette lines, and a less defined chin can make the lower face look older or more tired than you feel. Restylane® Defyne is a firmer hyaluronic acid filler designed to support these deeper areas while still moving naturally when you talk and smile. Patients from West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Century City, and Culver City visit Dr. Kami Parsa’s Beverly Hills office for dermal filler treatment that respects the structure of the whole face.
Deep folds are often areas that patients have already had filled elsewhere, sometimes many times, and Dr. Parsa pays close attention to that history. He lectures on evaluating and treating the previously filled patient, including when older filler should be dissolved before new product is added. As an oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon whose practice is devoted to the eyelids and face, he plans lower face treatment with the midface and eyes in mind. His perspective on aesthetic medicine has been featured in VICE and the Miami Herald.
“When a smile line keeps coming back, the answer is not always more filler in the line. Sometimes the support is missing higher up, and that is where the plan should start.” — Dr. Kami Parsa
What Is Restylane® Defyne?
Restylane® Defyne is a hyaluronic acid filler made by Galderma with its XpresHAn Technology™, a manufacturing process designed to create a gel that is supportive yet flexible. It contains lidocaine for comfort and, like other hyaluronic acid fillers, can be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase if needed.
The FDA approved Restylane® Defyne in 2016 for mid-to-deep injection to correct moderate to severe deep facial wrinkles and folds, such as smile lines (nasolabial folds), in adults over 21. In 2021, its approval expanded to chin augmentation for adults over 21 with mild to moderate chin retrusion. Use in other areas is off-label, and Dr. Parsa will tell you whether a proposed use is approved or off-label.
Restylane® Defyne Versus Restylane® Refyne
Both products use the same technology, but Defyne is the firmer of the two and is suited to deeper folds and structural support, such as the chin. Restylane® Refyne is softer and more flexible, which suits moderate lines and patients who want a lighter correction. Some patients benefit from both in different areas.
Is Restylane® Defyne Right for You?
Restylane® Defyne may be a good fit if you have:
- Deep smile lines or marionette lines
- A mildly to moderately receding chin that you would like to strengthen without an implant
- Lower face lines that have not responded well to softer fillers
It is not appropriate if you have a history of severe allergies or anaphylaxis, an allergy to lidocaine or the proteins used in making the gel, a bleeding disorder, or an active skin infection in the treatment area. It is also not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. When lower face lines come mainly from volume loss in the cheeks, restoring the midface first may give a more natural result. Your Treatment and Recovery
Your visit begins with a consultation in which Dr. Parsa or licensed members of his clinical team review your facial structure, skin quality, and any past filler treatments. Treatment usually takes 15 to 30 minutes, using a fine needle or a blunt cannula depending on the area.
Results are visible right away, though swelling may make the area look fuller for several days. Most patients return to normal activities the same day and avoid strenuous exercise, heat, and pressure on the area for about 24 hours. Results typically last up to about 12 months, depending on the area and your metabolism. Restylane® Defyne can be combined with BOTOX® or skin tightening for a more complete lower face plan.
Risks and When to Seek Care
Common side effects include swelling, bruising, redness, tenderness, and firmness at the injection sites, which usually resolve within one to two weeks. A rare but serious risk is accidental injection into or compression of a blood vessel, which can damage skin and, very rarely, affect vision. Call the office right away and seek emergency care if you notice vision changes, severe or worsening pain, or skin that turns pale, blotchy, or dusky after treatment.
