EmSculpt NEO Treatment
Stubborn areas that resist diet and exercise are a common frustration, particularly along the abdomen and flanks. EmSculpt NEO combines radiofrequency heating with high intensity focused electromagnetic energy in a single 30 minute session, reducing fat and strengthening muscle in the treated area at the same time. Patients visit the Beverly Hills office from Brentwood, Century City, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and across Los Angeles for EmSculpt NEO treatment.
Dr. Kami Parsa’s recent academic work includes a 2026 review on GLP-1 medications and skin health, accepted for publication in Aesthetic Surgery Journal Open Forum, which looks at how rapid changes in weight and body composition affect the skin. That interest in how the body responds to change shapes how body treatments are discussed here, as a complement to healthy habits rather than a replacement for them. He is an oculoplastic and reconstructive surgeon with more than 20 years of clinical experience and an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
“Body devices work best for people who are already close to their goal and want help with an area that will not respond. They are not a substitute for nutrition and exercise, and I would rather say that plainly.” — Dr. Kami Parsa
What Is EmSculpt NEO?
EmSculpt NEO is a body contouring device made by BTL. It delivers two kinds of energy through one applicator:
- Radiofrequency: Warms the tissue, raising the temperature of fat cells enough to damage them so the body clears them gradually over the following weeks.
- High intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM): Triggers strong muscle contractions that the muscle cannot achieve voluntarily, prompting the fibers to adapt in a way similar to intense exercise.
EmSculpt NEO is FDA-cleared, not FDA-approved, which is the standard pathway for devices of this type. Clearances cover the abdomen and flanks for fat reduction and muscle strengthening, along with muscle toning in other areas such as the arms, calves, buttocks, and thighs. Studies of the device have been conducted in patients with a body mass index up to about 35, so it is not a weight loss treatment.
What to Expect During Treatment
Your visit begins with a consultation with Dr. Parsa or licensed members of his clinical team, who review your health history, implants, and goals. During treatment, the applicator is secured over the area and you lie still while the device cycles through heating and contraction phases. Most patients describe the sensation as intense warmth with strong, involuntary muscle contractions rather than pain, and the intensity is adjustable.
Each session takes about 30 minutes. A typical plan is four sessions spaced several days apart. There is no recovery period, and most patients return to normal activities right away, though muscle soreness similar to a hard workout is common for a day or two. Results develop over the following weeks and are usually assessed about three months after the last session. Results vary from person to person, and maintaining them depends on diet, activity, and weight stability.
Is EmSculpt NEO Right for You?
EmSculpt NEO may be a good fit for adults who:
- Are close to their goal weight and want help with a specific area
- Want fat reduction and muscle strengthening together
- Prefer a non-invasive option with no recovery period
- Have realistic expectations about the degree of change
EmSculpt NEO is not appropriate if you have a cardiac pacemaker, defibrillator, neurostimulator, drug pump, or any electronic or magnetic implant, or metal implants in or near the treatment area. It is also avoided over an intrauterine device containing metal, during pregnancy, and over a hernia in the treatment area. Tell your provider about heart conditions, epilepsy, bleeding disorders, recent surgery, fever, and any implanted device before treatment.
Risks and When to Seek Care
EmSculpt NEO is generally well tolerated. Common effects include temporary redness, muscle soreness, and mild swelling. Less common risks include skin irritation, burns from the heating phase, and temporary muscle spasm or cramping. Contact the office if you notice blistering, a burn, pain that worsens after treatment, or firm lumps in the treated area that do not settle.
