What Is Sculptra?
Sculptra is made of poly-L-lactic acid, a biocompatible material that has been used in medicine for decades. Rather than filling an area directly, it stimulates the skin to produce new collagen over the weeks and months after each session. The poly-L-lactic acid is gradually absorbed by the body, while the collagen it helps build remains.
The FDA has approved Sculptra for the following uses:
- Facial lipoatrophy: Approved in 2004 to restore facial fat loss in people with HIV.
- Smile lines and facial wrinkles: Approved in 2009 to correct shallow to deep nasolabial fold contour deficiencies and other facial wrinkles.
- Cheek wrinkles: Approved in April 2023 to correct Fine Lines and Wrinkles in the cheek area, with results lasting up to two years in clinical studies.
Other uses, such as treatment of the temples, chin, jawline, or body, are considered off-label, and your injector will explain which uses are approved during your consultation.
How Sculptra Differs From Other Fillers
Sculptra is often grouped with fillers, but it works on a different timeline and in a different way.
- Gradual results: Improvement develops over a few months as collagen forms, rather than appearing all at once.
- A series of treatments: Most patients need two to three sessions spaced several weeks apart.
- Skin quality: Sculptra is valued for improving firmness and texture as well as softening wrinkles.
- Reversibility: Unlike Juvéderm® and Restylane, Sculptra cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase.

What to Expect During Sculptra Treatment
Your visit begins with a consultation with Dr. Parsa or licensed members of his clinical team. They assess your skin quality, facial structure, and any previous filler, then recommend how many sessions are likely needed. Sculptra is mixed with sterile water ahead of time and may include lidocaine for comfort. Each session usually takes 30 to 45 minutes.
Right after treatment, the face may look fuller from the fluid that carries the product. This fades within a few days, and the gradual collagen response begins over the following weeks. You will likely be asked to massage the treated areas several times a day for several days, which helps distribute the product evenly. Swelling, tenderness, and bruising usually resolve within a week or two, and most patients return to normal activities the same day. Final results typically develop over a few months after the last session.
Risks and When to Seek Care
Common side effects include swelling, tenderness, redness, bruising, and small bumps that can be felt under the skin. The most important risk specific to Sculptra is the formation of small bumps or nodules, which can appear weeks or months after treatment and may need medical management. Careful preparation, correct injection depth, and post-treatment massage help lower this risk. Rarely, any injectable can enter a blood vessel and block blood flow, which can damage the skin and, in very rare cases, cause vision loss or stroke.
