What Is Juvéderm Voluma XC?

Voluma XC is part of the Juvéderm® collection of hyaluronic acid fillers and is placed deep, beneath the skin or just above the bone. The FDA has approved it for three uses in adults over 21:

• Cheeks: Approved in 2013 to correct age-related volume loss in the midface, with results lasting up to two years with optimal treatment.
• Chin: Approved in 2020 to improve the chin profile, with results lasting up to two years with optimal treatment.
• Temples: Approved in March 2024 to improve moderate to severe temple hollowing, with results lasting up to 13 months with optimal treatment. Providers must complete Allergan’s product training before treating the temples.

Voluma is made with Vycross® technology, which gives it the lift and structure needed for deeper placement, and it contains lidocaine for comfort. Like all hyaluronic acid fillers, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if needed. Use of Voluma in other areas is considered off-label, and your injector will explain which uses are approved.

What to Expect During Voluma Treatment

Your visit begins with a consultation with Dr. Parsa or licensed members of his clinical team. They review your medical history, assess facial structure and proportions, and explain how much product is likely needed. Temple treatment is performed only by an injector who has completed the required training. The injection usually takes less than 30 minutes, using a needle or blunt cannula placed deep in the tissue.

Results are visible right away and settle over about two weeks. Mild swelling, tenderness, bruising, or a feeling of firmness is common and usually resolves within one to two weeks. Most patients return to normal activities the same day, though it helps to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and extended sun or heat for about 24 hours. A follow-up visit lets your injector check symmetry and add a touch-up if needed.

Risks and When to Seek Care

Most side effects of Voluma are mild and temporary, including swelling, tenderness, bruising, firmness, lumps, and redness. Less common risks include infection, delayed swelling, and nodules that may need treatment. Rarely, filler can enter a blood vessel and block blood flow, which can damage the skin and, in very rare cases, cause vision loss or stroke. The temples and midface contain important blood vessels, which is why deep anatomical knowledge and proper training matter.
