5 Factors Impacting Aging Around the Eyes
The eyes are one of the most expressive features on the face, and they contribute so much to your facial appearance. One of the first places you can notice facial aging is around the eyes. Everyone ages differently, but everyone notices changes around their eyes as they get older. While it may occur differently for each person, here are five factors that can make your eyes, and face, look older.
1. Lost skin elasticity
The skin around the eyes is thinner than most facial skin. When the skin begins to lose collagen, elastin, and other components that contribute to firmness and elasticity, eyelid skin begins to sag and crease. Fine lines are common around the eyes as the skin becomes thinner and less firm. This creates the crow’s feet and sagging on the lower eyelids, and the droopy skin on the upper eyelid.
2. Orbital Fat Loss
The fat under the skin provides volume. When fat begins to diminish around the eye orbit, it changes its appearance. Tear troughs become deep grooves, creating darker circles. The eyes may begin to look sunken, adding to the older and tired appearance.
3. Volume Loss Below the Brow
Fat loss is also lost above the eyes and below the eyebrows. This allows the eyebrows to descend closer to the eyes, pushing the upper eyelids downward. The eyebrows lose their youthful arch, and the upper eyelids look droopy and tired.
4. Droopy Cheeks
The buccal fat pad and cheekbone on the upper cheek impact the undereye area. As you get older, the cheekbones can lose volume and the cheek fat pads can droop. This causes a loss of support for the undereye area, increasing the appearance of large eyebags.
5. Eyebags
The puffy bags under the eyes occur for many reasons. Droopy cheeks are one factor, but loose skin, genetics, and fat herniation can all contribute to permanent eyebags that affect your eyes and facial appearance.
Personalized Eye Rejuvenation
When it comes to eye rejuvenation procedures, every person needs a personalized approach. While one person may have excessively saggy eyelid skin, another person may be experiencing higher amounts of fat or volume loss. A combination of techniques may be needed to refresh the eyes, from performing a brow lift to performing various types of blepharoplasties to restore a youthful appearance to the eyelids.
