When it comes to aging, the midface is often an overlooked area. By ignoring this area of your face, you are running the risk of looking older. Cheek augmentation can restore your youthful appearance, and your confidence as well.
What is Cheek Augmentation?
Cheek augmentation, also known as midface modification, is a term used for several procedures that can augment the structure and appearance of the cheeks. Cheek augmentation can be achieved using implants or fillers. Submalar, or mid-face, implants are installed under the skin where the cheekbone starts. Malar implants are placed below the skin in the area where the cheekbone sits in order to achieve a more angular facial structure.
Fillers are more often used by older patients to achieve a fuller cheek area without undergoing a surgical procedure. These fillers are made with hyaluronic or polylactic acid and are injected into the cheek and under eye area to plump the face and make the face appear younger.
Implant Surgery: What to Expect
During surgery, the surgeon will administer an anesthetic. An incision will be made large enough to accommodate the implant. Once the implant is placed, the surgeon will close the incision, which will be small enough to result in very minimal, if any, scarring. The incision will be closed with sutures or adhesives, depending on the type of incision used.
After surgery, expect to see localized swelling that can range from a few days to around two weeks. You may experience bruising and tenderness during this time as well, and cool compresses can help reduce swelling and pain. You may also experience numbness in the region for up to a few months post-surgery. Regular activity may be resumed within a few days after the procedure, but you will be advised to avoid injury to the region for at least 4-6 weeks.
The midface is an often-overlooked area when it comes to facial augmentation, but it can create dramatic, natural-looking results that will leave friends and family commenting on your youthful looks.
