Unsightly scars can really impact the way you feel about yourself. Your lack of self-confidence can also affect the way others perceive you. Don’t let the appearance of your scars stop you from enjoying your life. Depending on the type of scar you have, there are procedures available to reduce their appearance.
These are unsightly nodules of red colored scar tissue that extend past the borders of the original wound. Keloid scars are often painful and itchy.
When a wound is healing the skins cells and connective tissue cells (fibroblasts) begin multiplying to repair the damage, resulting in a scar. With keloids, the fibroblasts overgrow and continue to multiply even after the wound is healed shut. This is why this type of scar is seen as a ball on the surface of the skin.
Hypertrophic scars are the result of an imbalance in collagen at the site of the wound. They occur most often when there’s too much tension around a healing wound. The skin of this type of scar is not as flexible as it was once was, so you may actually have restricted movement.
These thick clusters of scar tissues are raised like keloid scars, but they tend to be milder, and don’t grow past of the original skin injury.
Hypertrophic scars are red and raised to begin with but after time they become flat and pale.
